- Early set of shackles or manacles
- Fully working
- Great vintage patina
A marvellous piece of police or prison history, from last century, these shackles, manacles or handcuffs have a great vintage patina. The shackles are fully working although a little stiff.
These manacles consist of two hinged metal loops which are joined in the centre with two small rings. There are hinges on the outside so that they may be opened and then closed with the small rings. There are also two small metal rings on the out edges. There is a large metal ring in the middle which would probably have been attached to a chain and used to guide the prisoner when moving them.
On close inspection there seems to be a plastic-like substance on the hinges where the cuffs open, perhaps bakelite or cellulose, which would date these to the 20th century. (Please see the photos for a closer look). Their vintage patina suggests early to mid-century.
An excellent item for a collector, an unusual display piece or great for a curiosity cabinet. They would also be an excellent prop for the theatre or television.
