Information

A large antique Scottish grouse foot kilt pin in a silver setting.

This stunning kilt pin which can also be worn as a brooch is formed from the foot or claw from a grouse bird.

Grouse foot pins were the traditional means by which to keep a kilt from gaping open and were worn when hunting grouse to bring good luck.

It has a simple catch and dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.

This unusual taxidermy brooch measures almost 9cm at its longest point. This is an antique piece but is in excellent condition. All claws are secure with one having a slight chip off the end. The claw appears to be held firmly in the silver setting but there is a small amount of movement.

The silver element of this piece is beautifully engraved in an ornate Victorian floral style around the sides, the end of the pin has been left plain for a monogram. There is a ring-like structure securing the middle claw to the pin. The claw itself is light brown in colour with a dappled appearance and the feathers have a slightly furry appearance.

If you are intending to use your kilt pin on a kilt, the traditional way to wear it is with the stone up with the claws of the grouse foot facing down.
