A strange and comical tobacco jar in the form of a jester’s head.
On one side of this jar the jester is happy and the bottom of the jar states ‘tobacco’. On the other, the jester’s face is sad and the bottom says ‘no tobacco’.
This comical jar dates from c.1890 and is in fair condition. The face which forms the jat itself is in good condition with chipping to the edge where it meets the lid. It has a strange spotted glaze in places from production, perhaps where bubbles formed in the glaze. The glaze is green in colour. The lid has been broken and then repaired with a darker green substance. There is evidence of cracks to the top of the decorative top piece.
The jar measures approx. 17.5cm to the top of the lid. It is marked ‘England‘ to the base.
A curious and comical jar.
