Information
This wonderful vintage ‘folk-art’ item comes from Peru. The plant is known as a gourd and is in the same species as pumpkins, some have soft shells and others, like this one, have hard shells. Gourds are thousands of years old and throughout history have been have been used for all sorts of things including tools, containers and even musical instruments. This particular one appears to be a shaker. It has not been hollowed out and the seeds are still contained within it, it gives a wonderful noise like a maraca.
The carvings on the outside feature a man (very much like Clint Eastwood in his poncho) and a lady with their llamas. The ‘pot’ measures approx. 8cm high x 12cm wide.
