Information

This strange head of a bird of prey has been carved from a parasite wood, also known as a wood rose, and originates from Bali.

The head is carved from a parasitic mistletoe type plant which attaches itself to the Chinaberry Tree. It lives off the sap from the tree making it become very hard. When the tree dies and rots away, these parasitic plants are left behind for local craftsmen to collect and carve into interesting sculptures to sell.

This piece measures approx. 20cm x 14cm x 11cm and is beautifully carved. The piece is in good condition and heavier than it appears so seems to be quite robust. I have left this as I found it, but I think a waxing would bring out the colours and textures of the wood if you would prefer.

Because of the mushroom like nature of the underside of the sculpture, this is such an intriguing object and very tactile. It is a joy to pick up and examine.

A very unusual wooden sculpture from Indonesia.
