A stunning heavy brass hourglass depicting various aspects of time. This times at about 50 minutes, so is more of a decorative piece rather than a time-piece.
This splendid sand timer is more poignant than it first appears. The symbols and markings remind us of the passing of time and how precious time is.
On the top and the bottom are two images depicting ‘Father Time’. He is seen as a man with wings flying through space and is holding a sickle. Father Time is the personification of time and this symbol has been used throughout history to represent the passing of time’s constant movement (also of entropy – disorder and chaos). Father Time’s robe (and timepiece – often an hourglass) were an early Renaissance addition and led him to be the companion of The Grim Reaper, the personification of death who would take the scythe from him.
In the outer circles of the top and bottom are the symbols of the constellations or astrological star signs.
On the inner edge of each end, where the glass sits, time is measured out by twelve roman numerals. The hourglass which is filled with sand, is kept in place by rubber retainers. The top and bottom piece are connected by three brass rods which are finished off with three balls on each end on which the hourglass stands.
This vintage hourglass/time piece is 23 cm tall, is vintage and is in good condition. The salt appears to come through the glass at varying rates which may indicate that the salt is slightly damp.
An hourglass time piece depicting the passing of time.
