A very unusual vintage handbag made from horn and brass.
This lovely bag has been formed into an attractive pillow shape from real bovine horn. Each corner is finished with a brass corner piece with a pierced ball. The upper corners having the brass chain handle attached.
It appears that the bag has been made from four pieces of horn. The lower piece on the back has a delightful natural appearance where the colours vary from dark to light grey with some amber tones in a striped pattern - very beautiful.
There is a brass band around the bag which attaches the top to the bottom with a hinge on the back and a clasp on the front. The hinge and clasp both work beautifully and are very ornate.
This lovely bag, I believe, originates from India and dates to the mid 20th century.
It is in good condition with no breakages or chips. There are a few small marks and scratches to the surface of the horn commensurate with age. It measures approx. 18cm x 13cm x 6cm. The inside of the bag is lined with purple velvet material and is in good condition.
A very unusual and ornate brass and horn handbag or purse.
