This fascinating print caught my eye when I was hunting for curiosities in a local antiques shop. This is a print of ‘The Gout’ published in 1799 by the caricaturist and printmaker, James Gillray.
Gillray suffered with gout towards the end of his career and he has captured the excruciating pain caused by gout as liking it to a small demon biting into his swollen red foot.
This interesting print is nicely mounted with pale green card and framed in a black wooden frame edged in gold. It measures approx. 25cm x 20cm. There is a small chip to the gold edging on the bottom right corner.
An interesting print and certainly a conversation starter, perhaps best appreciated by someone suffering from the condition.
