An exquisite screw type nutcracker in a very elaborate ‘art nouveau’ style. I understand these originate from France and date from the early c20th.
This beautiful nutcracker is white metal and has its original wooden base for standing on any surface without the worry of scratching.
It is in excellent condition for its age and stands at 9cm tall. The detail on every part of this piece is wonderful even down to the cover at the bottom of the screw. There is gold colouring showing in some tiny areas, which may suggest that this was originally gold plated or gilded, or perhaps it’s silver plated. I cannot find a hallmark or maker’s mark.
There is a little hole in the bottom and I wondered whether there was something missing, but I understand that this was the design. The screw turner does tumble down on its own by gravity.
A gorgeous French nutcracker too beautiful to be stored in a drawer.
