A delightful little Chinese silk iron made from brass with a pretty enamelled handle.
A piece of coal would have been put into the cup where it would have heated up gently and then drawn along the silk material to iron out any creases.
The brass coal cup has a dragon design with a wavy edge which is slightly higher at the handle end. The embossed enamelled handle, in blue, green, yellow and pink shades, features a floral scene with a flower, leaves and a butterfly. There is a little steadying foot on the handle so the coal was less likely to fall out and damage the silk.
This item, I believe was made for the tourist industry in the early to mid-20th century. It is in good vintage condition with a slight tarnish to the brass and few little rust marks to the enamelled handle which all add to its vintage character. It measures approx. 12cm long x 3.5cm high and the cup is approx. 6cm in diameter.
The silk iron makes a wonderful and unique tea light holder (as seen below).
