Carved Horn Bread Fork
A stunning collectable bread or serving fork, beautifully decorated and finished with a carved horn handle in the shape of a hoof.
What an unusual fork this is! I believe it is silver plated although it hasn’t been tested and there are no maker’s marks. The workmanship on the metalwork is stunning. It is very ornate especially where the metal meets the handle. The carved horn (possibly faux horn) is finished off at the end with a deer’s hoof. This could indicate that it is Scottish.
The fork is of traditional form with a three-pronged end which looks much like a trident. One of the prongs has been bent splayed out slightly.
Historically, bread forks were used to pierce the loaf and hold it in place whilst slicing with a knife. However, this would be equally suitable for serving meat or other foods.
The hoof design of this fork gives it quite a Gothic feel, perhaps even a little devilish!
