This unusual powder compact features the ship ‘Asturias’ which has been reverse painted with butterfly wings acting as the background sky and water. The butterfly wings have been expertly mounted so that the sky and water appear differently. the compact is in excellent condition for its age. I did a little research on the ship and it seems that when the ship had two funnels (as shown on the compact) it was sailing as a civilian emigrant ship from Britain to Australia in the mid 20th century. There is a wonderful website with lots of information about the ship here: http://www.ssasturias.net/aboutthissite.html
This gorgeous little compact measures just under 5cms square and still has its original ‘pad’ and there are signs that the compact was actually used.
