A beautiful Art Deco butterfly wing sterling silver pendant with a sulphide image of a kneeling nude.
This pendant is named ‘Azura Diamond’. Azura is a female name meaning blue reflecting the woman amidst the blue wings and of course the piece is a delightful diamond shape.
This necklace features in its centre the wing of the blue morpho butterfly from South America. The picture of the kneeling woman has been made from sulphide, a form of sulphur. It dates from around the 1920’s and has a sterling silver setting with an ornate border.
The silver setting is a charming diamond shape with the traditional edging, but the glass diamond shape has its corners opened, which is quite unusual. The butterfly wing itself is in very good condition with only the slightest signs of age. The back of the casing has been slightly dented but this does not appear to have affected the butterfly wing. The word SILVER has been stamped on the back. There is no maker’s mark. This is a delicate piece and measures just over 2cm at its longest point.
The morpho butterfly wings were specifically chosen last century because of their vibrant colour and the way in which the tiny scales catch and reflect the light.
A sweet and delicate pendant.
