A vintage or antique fly swish with real animal hair and a carved horn handle.
A very unusual vintage piece of tribal art. This is a fly swish, fly swat or a fly whisk. It is made from animal horn and hair, probably a buffalo or something similar.
The handle is made from two pieces of horn joined with silver metal. One end holds the swish and the other has been carved into a face and neck with a magnificent hat or headdress. Each side of the hat or headdress has been inlaid with silver metal streaks and two pieces of blue stone, possibly turquoise, and a single red stone. The head appears to be African, perhaps Egyptian, and was probably produced as a souvenir piece.
There is a leather strip which passes through the horn handle which allows the piece to hang either from the wrist, storage or as a decorative piece. It appears to be completely natural with no signs of glue, pins or man-made material.
The handle measures approx. 15cm and the swish measures approx. 33cm, making the piece 48cm in total.
A decorative and useful piece.
